Freising
Picturesque Bavarian town with university flair
Situated on the banks of the Isar and Amper rivers, Freising impresses with its picturesque location and rich history dating back to Roman times. The old town with its imposing cathedral and historic, winding alleyways exudes authentic charm. As the location of Bavaria's oldest university, the University of Freising-Weihenstephan, the town also plays an important economic and cultural role. The column on Marienplatz is not only a hive of activity during the town festivals. Twice a week, the Green Market takes place on the square, where you can buy all kinds of goodies. A small green oasis can be found on Weihenstephaner Berg, where enchanting gardens invite you to take a stroll. There are numerous activities for all ages in Freising. Here are our highlights!
Ice Skating
Lace up your skates! At the Weihenstephan Arena, you can glide across the ice and practice your spins daily (except on December 24 and January 1). Looking for even more excitement? Try your hand at ice hockey during the stick skating sessions on December 30 and January 2. Helmets are mandatory, and protective gear is recommended.
Schafhof
The European Art Forum of Upper Bavaria is better known as Schafhof in Freising. The majestic building hosts exhibitions of regional and international artists throughout the year. Highlights include the works of artists participating in a European exchange program, who incorporate their experiences into their creations.
Café Botanika
If you’d like to recharge after an art exhibition with coffee and homemade cake, Café Botanika, located right next to Schafhof, is the perfect spot. In summer, you can enjoy outdoor seating with a stunning view of the surrounding greenery. Simply relax, unwind, and let your soul wander.
Public Old Town Tour
Freising is best explored on foot – ideally with a public old town tour. Every Saturday, the tour takes you to the most important historical sights around Marienplatz and Domberg, offering an overview of the development of the oldest city on the Isar River. You can sign up directly at the tourist information office.
Climbing center Freising
Sky's the limit here! On a total climbing area of 1,200 m² with a wall height of 14.5 m or the 500 m² bouldering area with various levels of difficulty, everyone from beginners to professionals will find their route. In good weather, you can even let off steam outside in the fresh air.
Weihenstephan Brewery
The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan has been in operation for almost 1,000 years. Learn about its history on a guided tour or enjoy one of the 16 different beers in the Bräustüberl. Of course, the right culinary accompaniment is also provided there. An excursion that tastes really good!
