“The Italians are coming” was the headline in major daily newspapers in Leipzig and Halle (Saale) following the award of LOS 2 in the Central German S-Bahn network transport contract. This is because there will be a change of operator in the Central German S-Bahn network from the 2026 timetable change. Länderbahn will then take over the S-Bahn lines S3, S5 and S5x with 41 new Siemens Mireo railcars. Länderbahn is the largest rail transport company within the nationwide NETINERA Group and belongs to the Italian state railroad Trenitalia via NETINERA. At the same time, Länderbahn can look back on a long and successful company history, especially in Saxony. Here in the Free State, it is well known in eastern Saxony with its vogtlandbahn and trilex product brands.

On the occasion of "Tag der Schiene", which is highlighting the German rail industry nationwide for the third time this year, Länderbahn is presenting itself as a company, but also as an employer, at Leipzig Central Station.

One of the most important challenges we are already facing today is filling around 350 jobs that will be created at Länderbahn as a result of the takeover of the S3, S5 and S5x lines of the S-Bahn network in Central Germany. Around 260 of these jobs will be in driving services alone. Against the backdrop of an acute industry-wide shortage of skilled workers, this task is gaining immense importance in order to be able to reliably provide all agreed transport services in the future. To this end, we have been carrying out initial training courses for career changers and recruiting new colleagues since this year.

For those interested, we will be on platform 17 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. with our current applicant train, also with a Siemens Desiro traction unit, where we will provide information about career prospects in the rail industry with guided tours and advice. Among other things, you can get to know the workplace in the driver's cab, which will be explained by our train drivers. Information and advice sessions can be held in German, English, Russian, Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian or Arabic, as the Länderbahn can build on a qualification program with language training that has been in place for years. Länderbahn already employs staff from at least 15 different nations, and with the S-Bahn service in the cosmopolitan city of Leipzig, DLB is also committed to strengthening diversity in local transport and using it to ensure the success of modern, future rail services.
